All three backgrounds were created exactly the same just on different colors of cardstock. The Prismatic Snowflakes were stamped around the edges of the background panel and embossed with gold, silver, clear, and white embossing powders. A text stamp was stamped over the background to add some interest and the edges of the designs inked to soften the effect.

Welcome to the August Edition of Making the Cut, my monthly video series at Simon Says Stamp! This month I am sharing a trio of modern squares backgrounds cards created with Basic Squares Wafer Dies. I love finding ways to take basics from my stash and using them in fun and unusual ways! Something as simple as a square is instantly transformed when tipped at an angle and inlaid for a stunning pattern! Pop a gorgeous floral die and sentiment strip on top and you have beautiful cards for any occasion!

THE BACKGROUNDS
All three backgrounds were created exactly the same with the Basic Squares Wafer Dies. Six squares were die cut and then five squares were die cut again with the next smallest square, essentially giving you five frames and a square. The center of each top fold card base was found with a ruler and I placed a small pencil mark there. Taking the largest frame, I adhered it to the top of the card and trimmed the excess. The next large frame was adhered next to it on a side and the excess trimmed. The excess pieces were then used to fill in the bottom and other side of the panel. The rest of the frames/squares were adhered the same way until the entire background was finished.
Inlaying the squares/frames gives you a nice flat panel, perfect for embellishing, isn't too thick, and is easy to mail. I don't recommend placing squares one on top of another as the layers get super thick, making them difficult to trim with scissors or a paper trimmer and you won't be left with a flat surface to embellish.
Once the background was assembled, Stick It Adhesive was adhered to both sides of a piece of Neenah 80 lb. Cardstock. A Crocus Flowers die was die cut from the cardstock, the backing paper removed from the floral, and adhered to the front of the card. Another Crocus Flower was die cut from a separate piece of smooth white cardstock. The backing paper was removed from the flower on the front of the card and the other die cut adhered on top. The flower was also die cut from Simon Says Stamp Lavender Cardstock and Hero Arts Palm Cardstock. The flower pieces were inlaid into the design.

A phrase from the Tiny Words Christmas Stamp Set was stamped on black cardstock with clear embossing ink and heat embossed with white embossing powder. The phrase was die cut with a Nested Banners Die and adhered below the die cut word with foam adhesive.

To create the rainbow circle inlay backgrounds I used the Circle Thin Frames and lots of beautiful cardstock in "rainbow colors". For the wider rings, I taped two dies together with repositionable tape to get that wider shape. Keeping all the rings, I was able to get two full inlay backgrounds like you see here by just rearranging the colors a bit for the second background! With the leftover skinny rings, I saved them for another project later on!
Pro tip: If you need to "flatten" the backgorund after you've glued or adhered your circles in place, placed the card front between a folded sheet of plain white printer paper after the glue has completely dried, and run it through your die cutting machine. The paper will insure you don't get any "die cut marks" from the cutting plates and the die cutting machine will flatten the circles to make your inlay look fantastic!
Glossy Accents was added to the eyes, paint palette, and tip of the paintbrush. A scattering of Lucy's Things Big Hearts were added to finish the card.
